On 20 April 2026, the Australian Banking Association (ABA) lodged an application for authorisation to conduct a trial of multi-bank regional ATMs, whereby holders of an Australian-issued card will be able to withdraw cash on a fee-free basis (regardless of whether they are customers of a bank participating in the trial). The ABA is also proposing the regional ATM trial will enable customers of the participating banks to deposit cash on a fee-free basis once the relevant functionality is available.

The ABA is seeking authorisation for itself, its member banks and other banks who wish to participate, NCR Atleos and other ATM deployers, and the Australian Payments Network. The ABA is seeking authorisation for 5 years.

The ABA is requesting interim authorisation to enable it to immediately begin taking the necessary steps to implement the trial (namely, those activities associated with establishing and evaluating the fee-free withdrawal capabilities of the trial).

The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ invites the views of interested parties on this application and request for interim authorisation. Submissions on the request for interim authorisation are requested by 4 May 2026.
