Petrol prices move up and down in regular patterns in Australia’s 5 largest cities. These petrol price cycles are the result of pricing policies of petrol retailers.

Fuel prices in regional locations

Petrol prices in regional locations are generally higher than in capital cities. Prices are also more stable, as most regional locations don’t have petrol price cycles.

What affects fuel prices

Changes in international benchmark prices and the value of the Australian dollar influence fuel prices. Other factors are pricing decisions by wholesalers and retailers, and levels of competition in different locations.

Wholesale suppliers and fuel resellers have rights and responsibilities under the code. It covers supply, sale and purchase of declared petroleum products, like unleaded petrol and diesel.

ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ action on petrol and fuel

ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ monitors fuel excise cut, fuel surcharges and fuel price movements

The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ is warning fuel retailers they should fully pass on all fuel excise cuts by the Federal Government as quickly as possible.
In addition, the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ has today served notices on several businesses operating across SA, WA, QLD and the Northern Territory requiring them to justify sizable ‘fuel surcharges’ imposed on deliveries to remote areas.

ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ authorises fuel majors to coordinate to ensure fuel supplies, with conditions

The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ has granted an urgent interim authorisation to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, its members, and other relevant industry participants to coordinate in managing impacts to Australia’s fuel supply chain stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.
The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ also published its second weekly petrol and diesel price monitoring update.
