About the new laws

The new laws start on 1 July 2026. They aim to improve the function and governance of the Murray-Darling Basin water markets, and increase overall market confidence, integrity and trust.

Prohibitions on market manipulation and insider trading in water markets will come into effect for all water market participants in the Murray-Darling Basin.

There are also obligations on water markets decision makers to announce water markets decisions. Decision makers include:

  • irrigation infrastructure operators
  • Australian Government agencies
  • Murray-Darling Basin state agencies.
