This guide covers misleading or deceptive conduct, unconscionable conduct, false or misleading representations and related offences, information standards and country of origin representations.
This guide is intended to reflect the consumer law at a point in time and does not reflect changes to the Australian Consumer Law which have occurred since publication. These changes include:
- changes to the definition of 'consumer'. For goods and services supplied from 1 July 2021, the threshold amount has increased from $40,000 to $100,000
- increases to the maximum civil and offence penalties for both corporations and individuals
- the introduction of the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016 and Competition and Consumer (Australian Consumer Law – Country of Origin Information for Seafood for Immediate Consumption) Information Standard 2025.
