This is the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´'s 14th report as part of its inquiry into the supply of electricity in the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the first of 2 under the extended inquiry direction.
This report provides updated analysis around the state of competition in the retail electricity market and examines calculated annual prices for residential customers across Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and South East Queensland. To inform this report, we collected residential pricing data from retailers covering 89.5% of residential customers.
The report examines:
- the state of competition in the retail electricity market across New South Wales, South Australia, South East Queensland and Victoria
- price outcomes for residential customers on flat rate, time of use and demand offers
- the extent to which residential customers are on offers that are priced above, at or below default offers
- residential customer switching rates and the extent of the ‘loyalty penalty’ for those customers that do not or cannot switch regularly
- the ‘best/better offer’ messages on customer bills and the potential savings that customers can achieve by switching to their retailer’s best offer.
