On 7 August 2019 the Government announced that it would direct the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ to conduct an inquiry into markets for tradeable water rights in the Murray-Darling Basin.

The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´â€™s inquiry consulted with a wide range of water market participants and other persons involved in water markets in the Murray-Darling Basin.

The date for the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ to provide an interim report on the Inquiry was extended from 31 May 2020 to 30 June 2020. The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ provided the Murray-Darling Basin Inquiry interim report to the Treasurer on 30 June 2020 and it was released to the public on 30 July 2020.

The ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ sought further feedback from stakeholders in response to the issues raised in the interim report, including through seeking submissions.

To provide stakeholders’ sufficient time to provide their submissions, the closing date for submissions was extended to 30 October 2020.

On 3 September 2020, the Treasurer directed that the date for the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ to provide a final report to the Treasurer be extended to 26 February 2021.

On 26 March 2021, the ÌÇÐÄÔ­´´ released its final report and guide to the final report.
